What is the importance of the “Occupancy Certificate”?

Hi,
Could you please share with me the importance of the “Occupancy Certificate”, who should issue it ? and who is responsible to get it from the concenred authorities. I heard that recently one apartment has been asked to vacate on not having the occupenacy certificate.

The occupation certificate is issued by the same authority that sanctioned the plan after inspection and verification that the building has in fact been constructed as per the plan and within permissible levels of deviation. It is mandatory for high rise buildings. The builder is responsible for getting the same. The inspectors who inspect the buildings also put the builders to undue harassment, which, in some cases, deter the builder from approaching the authorities for the O.C.Vatsala
